India needs a strong Lokpal institution
Recently, India in general and political corridors in particular are heated by debates, dharnas, hunger strikes, and various other means of agitation to bring a strong bill called Jan Lokpal. What is this Lokpal? Why is it creating this much of upheaval? In order to remind you, this Lokpal bill is pending in Indian parliament for last forty two years. It was first introduced in the 4th Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian parliament) in 1968 and got clearance from it in 1969 but while pending in Rajya Sabha (upper house of Indian parliament) the Lok Sabha dissolved and thus it was lapsed at that time. . Even after that first attempt it was introduced several times again but with no fruitful result. You can buy images and content on Lokpal to further update your knowledge from reputed media houses and also buy videos about the same.
Lokpal is an institution which will look after the complaint and corruption cases of political bosses and the bureaucracy; it will also look out for citizens' grievances related to governmental work. It was introduced by the Swedish Parliament for the first time in the world and also by many western countries like England, USA etc later on. Many developing countries also have this institution to combat corruption and other related aspects.
India is a democratic republic country where people elect their leaders through adult franchise and these elected representatives make law by the medium of parliament and also govern the country. You can buy videos and images about the developments related to Lokpal bill from some reputed media houses. In India an existing institution called central bureau of investigation (CBI) looks after corruption and other related issues; and particular departmental related corruption cases are taken care by departmental vigilance teams. Further, we also have central vigilance commission which is only a recommendation making body which means it can only recommend whether any government servant should or should not be prosecuted in any complaint against him. Thus, it would not be wrong to say that all these institutions lack the power to curb the menace of corruption.
Furthermore, to bring strong Lokpal in India people are strongly agitating and a campaign called India Against Corruption is leading this agitation from the front, lead by social activist Anna Hazare and his team. They are demanding effective and strong Lokpal which is independent of any governmental influence, as we have seen in past that, this filthy influence has profoundly affected the whole functioning of existing corruption fighting institutions e.g. CBI, CVC etc. Demands put forward by this campaign are not completely accepted by the government in power, which has created an environment of political turmoil in the country.
If at all we want to fight this monster of corruption we need strong institutions which are independent of government control. This will require a "political will" which is missing for last forty two years. Corruption is a cancer which is eating our society from inside and this institution of Lokpal can work as anti cancer medicine. But the responsibility of combating it lies on each individual. We should pledge that we shall not accept and give bribes and also raise our voice against all manifestations of corruption. This pledge of ours will make our country a better place to live for future generations
