    School Psychologists

    • Many psychologists find employment in schools. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of psychologists in school districts is expected to increase due to the greater awareness of a child's mental health problems and its link to erratic behavior. The 2010-2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook states that in 2008 the median annual wages and salary of psychologists employed by elementary, middle or secondary schools was $64,140. The middle 50 percent of these mental health professionals earned between $48,700 and $82,800.

    State Government

    • A psychologist may find employment with his state government, working in state-run mental health facilities or conducting psychological research for a department of the state government. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that in May 2008, the median annual salary of a state-employed psychologist was $63,710, while the percentage of psychologists working in this field is expected to grow by 14 percent from 2008 to 2018.

    Outpatient Care Facilities

    • A psychologist employed at an outpatient care facility may conduct substance abuse programs, work with women who have been abused or provide anger management sessions for those under court order. Clients attending an outpatient care facility are able to function normally in the real world and do not require being committed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual median salary of a psychologist working in an outpatient care facility was $59,130 in May 2008.

    Industrial Psychologists

    • Some professions maintain a staff of psychologists to help workers cope with the stress of the position. This is seen in a wide variety of industries from law enforcement to manufacturing, and even in professional sports. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, psychologists employed in one of these areas of industry earn the highest median salary when compared to the pay of psychologists in other fields. The median annual salary of psychologists in any of these organizational fields was $77,010 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent of these professionals earned a median salary between $54,100 and $115,720.
