    • 1). Choose a 7-foot medium heavy spinning rod with a matched reel and 20-lb. test monofilament fishing line.

    • 2). Tie a red drum leader rig onto the end of the main fishing line with a Uni knot. Choose a leader rig that has a 5/0 or larger circle hook and a minimum of a 1/2-oz. egg weight. Moisten the Uni knot before pulling down tight and trim excess line from the free end of the line with scissors.

    • 3). Place a piece of cut mullet fish or shrimp onto the hook. Thread the hook securely through the cut bait so that the point of the hook protrudes slightly from the fish.

    • 4). Cast the rig into the water where red drum are thought to be actively feeding. Locate shallow water with grassy flats or clear shallows where red drum hunt for small crustaceans and shrimp.

    • 5). Allow the rigged bait to settle to the bottom and move with the current. Maintain a tight line while the rig is in the water.

    • 6). Allow the red drum to take the bait and turn before setting the hook. Raise the rod tip and sweep the rod to the side to set the hook. Reel down on the line to take up slack and maintain a tight line while the fish is played and landed.
