Liven up the garden in a short period of time with rapidly growing flowering plants. With their ability to bloom and grow faster than most plants, they are ideal to grow when you want to quickly transform the landscape. Planted side-by-side, they help to create privacy for the home because they make ideal barriers. Grown in a wide range of shapes--each with its own distinct size and shape--many thrive in a wide range of soil varieties, as long as they are well-drained. - Butterfly bush (Buddleia davidii) is a deciduous plant with a rapid growth rate that flowers on new growth. It grows five to 10 feet wide and up to eight feet tall, and has a large, rounded form with arching branches. The branches on butterfly bushes have small, fragrant blooms beginning in summer and lasting until fall. Flower colors include lavender, purple, pink, white and yellow. The gray-and-green to blue-and-green foliage grows up to 10 inches long and emerges in late spring. Hardy, butterfly bushes are drought-tolerant and tolerate a wide range of soil types. They grow best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Grow the butterfly bush in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones five to nine.
- Moss phlox (Phlox subulata) is an herbaceous perennial flower that has a vigorous growth rate and mat-forming habit that resembles moss, hence its common name. Moss phlox grows half a foot tall and one to two feet wide, and is noted for its creeping habit. The tubular-shaped, three-quarter-inch-wide blooms on moss phlox grow in pink, purple, red and white. They produce a carpet of mid-spring blooming flowers that are ideal planted along rock gardens, edgings and foundations. The awl-shaped, linear, deep-green foliage on moss phlox is one-inch long and retains some of its green color in winter. Moss phlox grows best in full sun, although it tolerates light shade in hot summers, and well-drained, humus-rich soil. Hardy, moss phlox thrives in sandy or gravely soils and withstands hot and dry climates. Grow moss phlox in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones three to nine.
- Lance-leaved coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata) is a perennial flower that has an aggressive growth rate and clumping habit. It grows one to three feet tall and wide, and produces yellow blooms that are noted for their toothed edging and flat, open habit. Lance-leaved coreopsis emerges in early summer and attracts butterflies to the garden. Hardy, lance-leaved coreopsis is tolerant of drought, humidity and heat, and tolerates a wide variety of soils. Lance-leaved coreopsis grows best in full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. To encourage a second round of blooms, deadhead old flowers as soon as they are visible. Grow lance-leaved coreopsis in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones four to nine.
