How Can I Fix Velcro?
- 1). Lift either side of the Velcro fastener tape. Examine how the tape is affixed to your object. The fuzzy side is the "loop" side. The prickly side is the "hook" side. Tapes will be glued or sewn to the object. If the object is a shoe or something that originally affixed the Velcro with an industrial sewing machine, glue the tape rather than attempting to sew it. To sew, proceed to the Step 2. To glue, proceed to Steps 3 and 4.
- 2). Install a needle for sewing denim and heavier fabrics into your sewing machine. Follow the original stitch lines and restitch the Velcro. If you can't see the original stitch line, use a straight stitch, and sew about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the outside edges of the Velcro tape. Reverse your machine and sew backward over the last half inch for strength. If you can't restitch the hook or loop side of the tape, proceed to Steps 3 and 4 to use glue.
- 3). Remove old glue from beneath the Velcro tape with your fingers or tweezers. According to Velcro brand fasteners, you should use a citrus-based cleaner to remove the adhesive. Apply the cleaner to a cotton ball, and scrub beneath the tape. When the glue is removed, allow the item to dry.
- 4). Apply a thin layer of urethane adhesive beneath the loose Velcro tape. According to the Aerostich Rider Wear website, use a contact cement that dries flexible, not rigid. Suggested glues are Aqua Seal and Barge Cement. Press the tape firmly against the item, using caution since some glues will bond your skin. Allow the glue to cure for 24 hours or the suggested time on the product packaging.
- 1). Brush the fuzzy side (the loop side) of the tape with a densely bristled brush, such as a fingernail brush, to fluff the loops. Sometimes the soft loop fabric becomes depressed, and there isn't enough bulk for the prickly hooks to grab.
- 2). Clean lint and threads from the prickly side (the hook side) by picking them from the individual hooks. Hair, threads, lint, and fuzz are attracted to the hook side of Velcro tape.
- 3). Use tweezers or a straight pin to lift packed hair and lint from the hook side of the Velcro.
