Projects With Swiss Dots
- BurdaStyle has published a Swiss dot maternity dress project that is fairly easy to put together. Using BurdaStyle's Tara pattern for the top, but substituting one heart-shaped piece for the chest pieces to add some modesty, and adding a pair of straps, you just have to add rectangles all the way down. There are three pieces left to add on after the top, and if you proportion the lengths of the pieces 8:5:3, you'll get something very similar to a dress Angelina Jolie wore during her pregnancy.
- A Swiss dot pattern can make your cake look like it came from the 1930s and give your party table a classic touch. Once you are finished frosting your cake and have all of the icing smoothed, you can add rows of Swiss dots all the way around it. If you have a 6-inch-high cake, put 10 toothpicks around the edge on the cake's top, evenly spaced. Below each toothpick, place a dot about 1/2 inch down, and then put another one 2 inches below that, and a third one 2 inches below that. After you've done that below each toothpick, add three more dots on rows halfway between the existing ones, but put each dot an inch below the existing rows to give the offset Swiss dot look.
- Swiss dots can also lend a timeless look to your invitations. Kits like the David Tutera patterns, available at JoAnn and other craft retailers, allow you to print out invitations in the fonts of your choice and then stick on Swiss dots in touches like rhinestone and pearl.
- The Swiss dot pattern also looks cute on ribbon -- and will make pretty bows for your daughter or niece. Hip Girl Boutique is just one of several online retailers selling ribbon with a variety of Swiss dots on it. With wrapping paper in solid colors, Swiss dot ribbon can make for a beautiful gift presentation as well.
