Six Steps to Make Your Baby's Crib Safe
- The baby should be placed on its back on a firm mattress in a crib with securely locked sides. The mattress should fit snugly into the frame so only two fingers fit in between the mattress and frame.
- Only the child and mattress belong in a crib. Avoid placing pillows, stuffed animals, comforters or any materials that could cause smothering in the crib.
- Dress the baby in a one-piece sleeper so blankets are unnecessary. Do not overdress the child or place the crib near a heat source. A cool child sleeps better and more safely.
- Nothing should cover the baby's face or head. When indoors, the child should wear nothing above the shoulders.
- If a blanket is absolutely necessary, place the baby's feet near the end of the crib. Place a light blanket around the child at chest level and secure it under the mattress' edge.
- Never place a baby in a waterbed or among stacks of cushions or pillows. Avoid placing the child in an adult bed, alone or with others.
