Products to Clean & Kill Mold
- Any mild household detergent or soap is efficient at cleaning mold off nonporous surfaces. While the detergent doesn't actually kill the mold, it does clean the mold off and prepares the surface for disinfection. Mix enough detergent with water until suds form and then scrub the affected area with a sponge. Avoid using ammonia-based detergents, as these will react with bleach causing toxic fumes.
- Bleach is one of the most effective products for killing mold. Combine about 1 cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water and coat the moldy area with the solution. Let the bleach sit there for 30 minutes, then rinse the entire area with water, and actively dry the area so you don't encourage additional mold growth.
- While detergent and bleach will clean and kill mold on any nonporous surface, a number of additional household products will kill or clean mold. A paste made out of vinegar and baking soda will kill most forms of mold and can sit and work on even vertical surfaces. If you have access to them, both borax and hydrogen peroxide are powerful mold killers. A large number of commercial mold killers are available, with names that usually have the word "mold" in them. Most of these commercial killers have the same active ingredients as the natural mold killing options.
- While numerous products kill or clean mold from nonporous surfaces, it is almost impossible to remove mold from porous surfaces like wood, drywall or paper. If the mold hasn't gotten all the way through, you can cut or sand away the affected area, removing the mold in the process. Otherwise, the only recourse is to dispose of the moldy material.
- When cleaning or killing mold, it is important to take certain safety precautions. Mold is especially dangerous when you are cleaning it, as the mold spores will break off and become airborne. Always wear gloves and a mask, and wet down the area first to lessen the number of airborne mold spores. Any mold-killing procedure should start by finding and correcting the source of the moisture that allowed the mold to grow, otherwise the mold will simply grow back.
