What to Do If Windows Will Not Create a Restore Point
- Microsoft Windows System Restore restores your computer to a previous state. The software rolls back the computer data to a previous time, called a "restore point." Check for problems with the restore point settings: reboot your computer into Safe Mode and create a restore point. Adjust the disk space for System Restore, to enable more space for restore point data. You may also need to scan for viruses or third-party software conflicts.
- In an extreme case, reformat your computer to original factory settings. This will delete all personal data on the hard drive, so backup all important files. A reformat requires the original computer manufacturer software, either on disk or on a partition on the hard drive. While a reformat is an extreme action, it solves software conflicts and improves the speed and efficiency of the computer.
- In most cases, the System Restore program is hindered by third-party software, such as a firewall or a virus, or insufficient disk space. Uninstall the offending software, and increase the space for restore points.
