How to Create a Splatter Look on Drywall
- 1). Prepare the surface of the wall or ceiling by wiping away dust, dirt and cobwebs. The splatter texture will hide most surface blemishes, but use a 6-inch drywall knife to scrape away any obvious protrusions.
- 2). Lay drop cloths on the floor near the project area. Applying splatter texture is messy, so it's better to use too many drop cloths than too few.
- 3). Mix your joint compound to the proper consistency, depending on the results of your tests. Add water if it's too thick. Typically, a thin consistency similar to heavy cream is effective for applying a splatter texture.
- 4). Apply the joint compound across the entire project area, either by sucking up some compound with a turkey baster and squirting the wall, or by dipping a brush in the joint compound, then flicking the brush at the wall. Alternatively, use whatever method you discovered during your testing process. Essentially, all you have to do is throw the joint compound at the surface in a way that creates the splatter effect you're after.
- 5). Allow the compound to dry fully, which shouldn't take more than 24 hours.
