How to Backwash a Hayward Pro Grid De Filter
- 1). Turn off the DE filter at the circuit breaker. Turn the multi-port valve handle to "Backwash." Roll out the backwash hose on the bottom drain outlet. If the filter has a slide valve handle, lift up on the handle, which is the backwash position.
- 2). Turn on the filter at the circuit breaker. Run the pump for two minutes or until the water running through the sight glass on the pump runs clear. Turn off the filter at the circuit box.
- 3). Turn the multi-port valve handle to "Rinse." Turn on the pump and run for 20 seconds. If the pump has a slide valve handle, skip this step.
- 4). Turn off the pump and move the multi-port valve handle to "Filter." On the slide handle, push the handle down until it snaps into place.
- 5). Pour the correct amount of DE powder into a coffee can. The gallon can will hold 2 lbs. of DE powder. The amount you need to use for your specific pump is located on the metal plate located on the exterior of the pump. The amount needed will be in pounds. You can only add 2 lbs. at a time to the skimmer.
- 6). Open up the skimmer cover. Turn on the pump and slowly pour the DE powder into the skimmer. Replace the cover and let the filter run for at least one hour so the DE powder circulates through the pump and coats the grid inside. If you need to add more than 2 lbs. of DE to your specific filter, add another 2 lbs. after the first hour. If you still need to add more, add another 2 lbs. after the second hour and continue until you have added the required amount of DE powder.
