How to Patch Wood Siding
- 1). Clean the damaged area with a power washer to remove all debris and paint flakes from around the area, so you can see the full extent of the hole or crack.
- 2). Ensure the damaged area of the wood is completely dry.
- 3). Hammer the chisel 1/4 inch into the wood around the crack or crevice to remove any damaged wood. Discard the removed wood chips. If damage continues to extend further into the wood than you thought, continue to remove 1/4-inch pieces until all the wood is healthy wood siding in that area. If the damage is extensive, a patch will not be enough, and that entire piece of siding will have to be replaced.
- 4). Place the wood putty in the hole, firmly packing it up to the surface of the wood to ensure it develops no air bubbles.
- 5). Scrape off any excess putty from the top using the drywall scraper.
- 6). Let the wood putty dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 7). Sand down any sharp edges of the putty until it is in the same shape as the wood siding.
- 8). Paint over the area of the wall with two coats of the same paint color used throughout the siding until the hole completely blends in with the rest of the siding. Acrylic latex paint is usually used on wood siding,
