Improve Your Health by Not Drinking Too Much While You Eat

I learned this tip from my wife, who discovered it while working with a Naturopathic doctor many years ago.
When most people eat, they typically have a glass of water, iced tea, juice, soda or wine with their food.
A big reason why people do this (although they are not aware of it) is to wash down the chunks of food they aren't properly chewing.
Of course, you know better.
But that's not the only reason people drink when they eat.
Drinking with a meal is part of our culture...
at least here in the US.
It's as American as apple pie.
I don't think I have ever gone to a restaurant, party or friend's house for dinner where drinks weren't served with food.
They just seem to go hand in hand.
The problem is that during the digestion process your body releases enzymes to help break down your food.
Even if you've chewed properly and broken down all of your food into liquid, your body still needs enzymes to effectively process the food.
So while these enzymes are produced to help break down food and to aid in digestion, what happens is that when you drink a lot while eating, you dilute the enzymes.
When you do this, the diluted enzymes are not nearly as effective as they would have been had you not drank the extra liquid.
This too can be a major contributor to indigestion...
and can dramatically sap your energy by making your digestive system work much harder.
While it is true that it is very important to drink lots of fluids...
during meals ISN'T the best time.
Between meals is a much better time to imbibe.
And while we are talking about drinking, let's take a second to discuss WHAT you are drinking.
Everyone knows that drinking clean, fresh water is the best thing for your body.
Soda, flavored teas and even juice, contain sugar and other "fillers" that aren't really good for you.
But what if you find water hard to drink because it has no flavor? The best advice I have is this...
Hot or cold herbal tea, can turn drab, boring water into something delicious and fun to drink.
When you add a natural sweetener, such as stevia, you have a delicious alternative to water that is still good for you.
So to recap...
drinking fresh, clean water between meals is important to your health.
And when you just want something with a little flavor, herbal tea, between meals, makes a great alternative.
