Acrylic Vs. Enamel Exterior House Paint
- Acrylic paint, often labeled as 'latex' even though it does not actually contain latex, is a water-based paint that contains acrylic, vinyl or other polymers. Paints that are labeled 100 percent Acrylic are the most durable of this kind of paint. A good quality acrylic paint will have better gloss retention and will be more fade resistant than an enamel.
- Enamel is an oil or alkyd based paint, used on exteriors traditionally as it is tough and durable. Enamel is solvent based and therefore it becomes toxic in the air releasing volatile organic compounds or VOCs which cause pollution. The government is cracking down on the use of paints with high levels of solvent and some states already have laws in place.
- The better choice of paint in these more eco-conscious times is acrylic. Providing that you buy a high quality paint, your exterior paint work should be as durable as enamel.
