Natural Removal

• White vinegar has many possible home uses. One of these is to remove urine spots and its odor. After drying the urine spot with paper towels or a cloth, dab the vinegar into the carpet or mattress, making sure that it gets deep enough to treat all the urine. Let it air dry.
  
  Salt is another great natural stain lifter. Pour a generous amount of salt on a urine spot and let it sit. After about 20-30 minutes, check the area. You should notice that the salt has changed from white to yellow and has absorbed the urine. Then vacuum away the salt.
  
  Shampoo and detergent have been used commonly to remove urine spots from mattresses for years. Other cleaning agents such as borax, baking soda mixed with hydrogen peroxide, and SHOUT stain remover are also effective. Alcohol can be used to disinfect a soiled mattress, but will not remove the stain.
  
  Preventing the stains from getting to your carpet or mattress in the first place is a wise defense. Depending on the colorfastness of the carpet, thickness, and amount of urine, it may take several applications of a number of the substances above to effectively remove the stain and odor. Pet owner can train their pets to use potty pads or contain them on hard floor areas while they are away. Parents can purchase mattress protectors to make cleaning night time accidents easier and prevent the headache of having to dry a soaked mattress.
  
  

What Not to Use

• Because urine contains ammonia, using commercial ammonia or bleach to clean a stain can backfire with pets. It can encourage a pet to continue to use the spot because the animal associates the ammonia smell with urination.
