How to Get Rid of Odor From Bath Towels
- 1). Set your washing machine to use hot water and set it to its highest water level capacity (or large load setting).
- 2). Add a medium-sized load of towels to the washer; do not stuff them in to fit more towels per load. The "Hints from Heloise" column in "The Washington Post" noted that overloading the washer is a common mistake that leads to sour-smelling towels.
- 3). Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the laundry load. Wash them as you normally would with your regular laundry detergent.
- 4). Place the towels in the dryer immediately after the washing machine stops. Dry them completely before removing them from the dryer. The odors may persist or worsen if you allow the wet towels to sit in the washer.
- 5). Hang the towels from a towel bar after each use. Allow the bathroom door to remain open for air circulation, as recommended by Columbia University's Health Q&A Service.
