How to Set Up the Internet on a Laptop Through a Router
- 1). Plug your router's power supply into a power outlet near your cable or DSL modem. It has to be close enough to connect the two with an Ethernet cable; the shorter, the better.

Run an Ethernet cable from your DSL or cable modem to the "Internet" or "Data" Ethernet port on your network router. The exact name of the port varies by manufacturer; it's usually set away from a group of numbered Ethernet ports. - 3

Connect an Ethernet cable to one of the numbered Ethernet ports on the router. Plug the other end into an Ethernet port on your laptop. Your laptop should now be connected to the Internet through your router. If you're using a wireless router, skip this step. - 4). Click the wireless signal icon in the Windows taskbar in the bottom right-hand corner of your laptop's screen and select your wireless network from the list that appears. If you haven't set up your wireless router yet, select the network with the default network name created by your wireless router. Check the router's manual for the default name. The router shares its Internet connection with all devices connected to its network.
