    • 1). Run a leaf rake attached to an extensible pool pole over the surface of the pool water. Collect any free floating debris with the rake and remove it from the pool.

    • 2). Add water to the halfway point in a sturdy container, such as a bucket. Pour one dosage amount of chlorine or granule based shock into the bucket, according to the manufacturer's directions. Stir the treatment and water until both are mixed thoroughly. A common dosage amount equals 1 pound of product per 10,000 gallons of water filling the pool.

    • 3). Add the mixture to the pool water. Spread the treatment over as large an area as possible by walking around the edge of the pool while applying the treatment.

    • 4). Pour a water clarifier directly into the pool water. A typical clarifier dosage includes 3 ounces of product per 10,000 gallons of water filling the pool. Refer to the specific instructions on the clarifier for any special application requirements.

    • 5). Circulate the pool system for at least a few hours, or until the cloudiness in the pool water settles out to the floor of the pool. Backwash and rinse the filter if the filter uses sand as the filter media, or spray clean the filter cartridges if the filter uses cartridges for filtration.

    • 6). Hook up the vacuuming equipment for the pool. Run the vacuum across the bottom of the pool slowly to pick up the settled out debris. If the debris becomes stirred up and floating, allow the pool to rest while the debris settles again before resuming vacuuming.
