Modern, Victorian, Classical - The Standards of Design

When you first started this adventure of making, building, or designing your dollhouse, did you know what style you wanted it to be? When you are contemplating your dollhouse design, remember that you are not just picking a room at a time, but the time frame or era in which they were created. This is creating a styling theme. Victorian, Modern, and Traditional, though they are not the only choices, are the major players with dollhouse manufacturers - lets look at each one. Victorian is the first major theme, it is recognized by the embellishments in furniture through long curved lines, elaborate fabric, and old fashioned pieces. If you want to stand out or go with a more up to date style, Modern design will give you simplicity, technology, and some great straight lined pieces. The last is Traditional furniture - it is more about functionality than design, giving you the pieces of furniture that you might find in a local store which is great to make a replica, or to just make your dolls feel at home.

Look Down: The Floor in your Kit

Flooring is a very interesting topic because no one really thinks to change it, and yet those that do always turn out more amazing than before. Undoubtedly Flooring is the foundation of your dollhouse, and as such is the foundation for all of your design choices. Not only that, it adds a very distinct touch that will take your dollhouse and move it to the next level. Carpet, linoleum, tile, stone, and hard wood are the most popular choices in flooring options. Carpet is a really fun choice, because it makes the kit seem like a miniature version of your house. Linoleum and tile are basically the same for your kit in application, they are simply different designs. Adding Stone for your deck, hardwood for your living room will add a fun touch - look around and find the best option

Miniatures and Contrast: Beauty with an Edge

The definition of a contrast is two distinct or different items that draw attention to one another. Using contrast works well to move your eye to a certain location of the room, or in a predetermined pattern. If you are planning to use color as your primary medium for contrast then refer to a color wheel - the colors opposite from one another will bring the most contrast. Using contrast in a room, is like using salt with food, you use to much and you get overwhelmed quickly. The standard is to restrain yourself to one contrast in a room, this way it doesn't get cluttered.

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. This big discovery was floor trim. Floor Trim is not a new creation, but what I found is instead of buying it, to use a very thin balsa wood found in most craft stores. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. My biggest discovery is when the trim hid most of the fine mistakes between the floor and the wall. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. It was a little addition that was fun to install and really added to the look of my dollhouse.
