How to Become a Correctional Officer in Canada
- 1). Finish high school. That is the minimum education level for a correctional officer, according to the government office Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
- 2). Enroll in a training program. Programs typically are called Corrections or Community and Justice Services. Two-year programs are offered through community colleges. Classes consist of criminal justice theory, law and psychology, and a work placement component.
- 3). Have a clear criminal record. You must have a clear record to become a correctional officer. Records are checked through Criminal Records and Information Management Services.
- 4). Decide on a jurisdiction. According to Prison Justice, there are 192 correctional facilities across Canada---76 federal and 116 provincial.
- 5). Recruits hoping to work in the federal corrections system must finish the 13-week Corrections Canada training course and pass an exam consisting of role play, an interview and a medical test.
