All about Alarm Systems Components

Alarm systems, also known as burglar alarms, are designed to alert the presence of intruders at the premises of property and business owners. This system has a good number of sensors that are connected to a central processing unit and raises a warning if there is triggering of a sensor. There are different availability of sensors and house alarms in Dublin, and the right one for you depends on your requirements and settings. Usually, a telephone line connects the device to a number that is pre-programmed to a security centre for any security breach.

The Different Components of an Alarm System

Alarm systems come mostly with the following parts:

Base Unit

It works as the base of the system. This unit is connected to a phone line that on receiving notifications from the sensors dials out to the pre-programmed number.

Keypad

The keypads are used to arm or disarm, with some having keypad fixed to the base unit while others provide for more keypads to be used to place each of them near multiple entries.

Door/Window Contact

One uses sensors of this type on windows and doors and triggers a warning as they are opened. One of the common types to be found in this type is the magnetic sensor that has two parts to it, one being fixed on the window / door while the other is kept on the door jamb. As soon as the door or window is opened, there is separation of the magnetic parts, thus resulting in the device to set off.

Motion Sensors

These sensors are useful to detect movement and come in different ranges. These are mostly useful for hallways and open entryways.

PIR Sensors

Also known as Passive Infrared, these sensors work on detecting heat changes in the covered area, thus functioning even in the dark.

Smoke Detectors

There are devices that also set off on detecting smoke. Although, this works as usual smoke detectors, they set off warning sound from the base unit in the event of fire.

Panic Button

These are mostly used in certain areas, like under the counter of the retail clerk, or they can be carried as wireless devices by the user. This helps the user to manually set a warning using the base unit.

Wireless Alarm System

This device works using radio signals, instead of wires as used with the wired ones. There are advantages and disadvantages of this system. Wireless devices require less wire to run, and thus are simpler to install and also make new components easy to add. Without visibility of any wires, thieves find it difficult to locate components and disable the base unit.

However, wireless technology is quite vulnerable to interference. As batteries are used in the components of the device, it could stop functioning if the battery runs out and the whole system could stop functioning at emergencies.

Cellular Alarm System

Although, the functioning is same as that of a traditional one, but its base unit uses cellular technology to dial out and are powered by battery. This type are right for business travelers or trailers available on construction sites and other short term installations. One needs to pay monthly fees to avail the cellular network services.

Central Station Monitoring

There are some systems that make use of station monitoring. Here, the base unit will dial a monitoring agency if there is a ringing. The agency in turn will call local emergency services that work on alarm in Dublin. Mostly however, they first call the property owner so that there is no reporting to the emergency services for a false warning.
