How to Make Room Decorations
- 1). Decide on a dominant color for each room. Use that hue to make at least three large splashes of color that are immediately noticeable upon entering the room. For example, paint one wide stripe of purple down the center of one wall, make some sew-free purple pillows (see link below for instructions), and fill a vase with some hand-made purple flowers.
- 2). Buy a dozen inexpensive matching frames, such as an 8-inch by 10-inch black metal one. Frame any of the following and then hang the frames in three rows of four with only about an inch between each frame for maximum impact. You might scan some family photos and have them blown up to 5-inch by 7-inch size, mat and then frame them. Alternately, show off your special interest: you might frame baseball cards in the same way, theater programs, old sheet music, a button collection, or any other items you will enjoy.
- 3). Find large wooden letters in a craft store and buy a few to make up a word or the initials of your lover's name. For example, you might buy the letters for "LOVE" or "FUN;" two people sharing a space might buy an ampersand and make "A & J" for example. Finish the letters with a wood stain, a colorful enamel, or use one of the kits now available for giving wood a metal look. Hang the letters at eye level.
- 4). Search thrift stores and garage sales for a variety of wall mirrors. Don't be afraid to mix modern designs with more traditionally framed mirrors. Lay them out on the floor and arrange them in a pleasing design. Mark your wall in pencil and hang the mirrors. This idea is a particularly attractive choice for a large, bare hallway.
- 5). Make a ribbon display. Buy a few five-foot lengths of a sturdy three-inch wide ribbon. Choose a bright color that compliments your décor. Now simply thumbtack the ribbons to the wall about one foot apart. Then staple assorted items onto each ribbon; you might use postcards, photos, ticket stubs, pictures clipped from magazines, greeting cards, and any other items that please you and say something about who you are.
