Making Face Molds From Clay
- Sculpture is a fundamental art form that is inspiring to little ones. It's hands on and the texture inspires creativity. Choose a soft clay that won't dry quickly so kids can take their time. Replace a plastic knife with a wooden craft stick to mold the clay. Keep a spray bottle of water on hand to re-moisten hardening clay.
- A face mask reproduction of someone special is a wonderful substitute for a painting or a portrait. Create a mask of someone's face, capturing their likeness. Carve the features out with a spoon. Create hair separately out of clay and give it texture using a fork or plastic knife to crave grooves into the clay. Give the mask as a present for a special occasion.
- After the mask has been molded, allow it to dry or put it in the oven until it is hard. Use acrylic paint to color the mask. Mix colors for the skin, eyes, lips and hair, and paint the mask one layer at a time. Paint the skin color first and allow it to dry. Then, paint the lips and allow them to dry. Repeat with the eyes and the hair, adding more than one layer of color to achieve full coverage if necessary.
- Accessorize the mask to personalize it and make it more interesting. Tie a scarf just under the neck to add some color and feminine detail to the mask. Make hair out of yarn or felt to create a funky, eclectic or cartoonish look for your mask. Add sunglasses, fake eyelashes, a necklace, earrings or headwear to give the mask personal and glamorous touches.
