How to Convert a Live Mixtape to iTunes
- 1). Use a 3.5 mm stereo-to-RCA "Y" cable to connect the RCA outputs on your tape deck to the "Line Input" jack on your computer if the mixtape is stored on an audio cassette.
- 2). Dub the mixtape’s audio tracks to your computer using audio-recording software such as GarageBand or Audacity. Set the recording software’s file format settings to record the audio in “.wav” format, with a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 16-bit sample size. These settings are required for a CD-quality recording. Record and save each audio track individually. This is only necessary if the mixtape is stored on an audio cassette.
- 3). Load the mixtape CD into your computer’s CD drive if the mixtape is stored on a CD disc.
- 1). Use graphic-arts software such as Adobe Photoshop, Photoscape or some other application to create an album cover for your mixtape. The overall picture must be shaped like a perfect square. Save the picture file in ".gif" or ".jpeg" format, using at least 600 by 600 pixel dimensions.
- 2). Go to “Sign Up” or “Contact Information” on the Tunecore, Catapult or CD Baby website. Fill out and submit the form to create an account with service. Registration is free.
- 3). Check your email for a message sent from the service with which you registered (for Tunecore and Catapult users only). Click the "Verification" link in the email to verify your account registration. You will automatically be taken back to the service’s website and logged into your account.
- 4). Select the option to submit or create an “Album” with the service.
- 5). Follow the on-screen prompts to upload your mixtape’s album cover. Select “Compilation” to choose a genre for your album. Enter the mixtape’s credit and publishing information. Enter the mixtape’s track information and upload the mixtape’s individual audio tracks to the service’s server. You can upload files directly from the CD inserted into the computer’s CD drive or from files saved on the computer’s hard drive. Select “iTunes” when prompted to choose retailers to which you wish to distribute your mixtape.
- 6). Fill in and submit your payment information at the appropriate prompt. Tunecore charges $19.99 to distribute an album as of October 2011. Catapult charges $25 and CD Baby charges $39 to distribute an album at the time of this publication. Once the payment has been processed, your live mixtape will be available on iTunes within 24 to 48 hours.
- 1). Launch iTunes.
- 2). Go to the “File” menu. Select “Add File to Library.”
- 3). Browse to the directory where your mixtape files are stored. Select the tracks you want add.
