How to Make Wire Drills
- 1). Slide on a pair of work gloves to protect your skin.
- 2). Measure and cut out two 4-by-10 3/4-inch shipping box cardboard pieces into the shape of the body of the drill. Cut out one piece of 1-by-4-by-10 3/4-inch high-density urethane foam to match the shape. Bond the two cardboard pieces between the foam with permanent epoxy. The body of the drill is now complete.
- 3). Measure and cut out two 2-by-10 1/4-inch shipping box cardboard pieces into the shape of the drill handle. Cut out one piece of 1-by-2-by-10 1/4-inch high-density foam to match the shape. Bond the two cardboard pieces between the foam with permanent epoxy. The handle of the drill is now complete.
- 4). Bond one of the short edges of the handle to the underside of the body with permanent epoxy to create the overall shape of the drill.
- 5). Measure and cut two 1-by-1 1/2-inch shipping box cardboard pieces and one 1-by-1-by-1 1/2-inch high-density urethane foam piece into the shape of a trigger. Bond the foam trigger between the cardboard pieces with permanent epoxy. Bond the trigger to the underside of the drill body.
- 6). Cut out a 3-by-3-by-3-inch high-density urethane foam block. Cut out and bond six 3-by-3--by-3-inch shipping box cardboard pieces around the body of the block. The block represents the drill battery. Bond the battery to the underside of the handle with permanent epoxy.
- 7). Cut out five 5-mm-by-6-inch pieces of metal wire.
- 8). Dull each wire with an abrasive sanding pad.
- 9). Twist three wires together with pliers into the long, narrow shape of a drill bit. Stick the drill bit 3 inches into the front end of the drill body at center.
- 10
Twist the remaining two wires around the handle of the drill in the manner of the stripes on a candy cane. The twisted wire acts as a prefabricated grip for the handle. Bond the grip to the handle with permanent epoxy. - 11
Boil 5 cups water and 1 cup flour for 3 minutes to create a papier-mache mix. Allow the mix to cool for 5 minutes. Pour the mix into a medium-size bowl. - 12
Soak a 1-by-3-inch newspaper strip in the mix. Press the strip into the drill. Continue until the entire drill -- minus the bit -- is covered in a layer of newspaper. - 13
Soak a 1-by-3-inch paper towel strip into the mix. Press the strip into the drill. Continue until the entire drill -- minus the bit -- is covered in a layer of paper towel. Allow 4 hours for the craft to dry. - 14
Coat the drill -- minus the bit -- in acrylic paint. Allow 2 hours for the craft to dry before handling or displaying.
