How to Knit Saddle Shoulders for a Sweater
- 1). Cast on 48 stitches and work in ribbing for 4 inches.
- 2). Knit one row, increasing in every fourth stitch by knitting in both sides of the stitch. You now have 60 stitches on the needle.
- 3). Work in stockinette stitch — purl the next row, then knit one and repeat — or any pattern stitch for 14 inches. Increase one stitch at each end of rows 4, 8, 13, 18, 23 and 28 for a total of 72 stitches. Work even after that to the total underarm length, ending with a wrong-side row.
- 4). Decrease 1 stitch at each end of the next two rows by knitting or purling together the third and fourth stitches in from the edge. Work the third row even. Repeat these three rows 12 times, so you have 16 stitches left on the needle.
- 5). Work the last 16 stitches even for 4 inches and slip them onto a stitch holder.
- 6). Make the second sleeve the same way.
