How to Backup and Restore OS X
- 1). Connect the external hard drive that you want to use for Time Machine.
- 2). Click "Use as Backup Disk" when prompted by OS X. Time Machine will now use it as the backup drive. If the prompt did not appear, continue to the next step, otherwise see the restoring sections for instructions on using Time Machine.
- 3). Click the "Apple" menu at the top left of the screen and select the "System Preferences" option.
- 4). Click the Time Machine option in the "System Preferences" window.
- 5). Click "Change Disk" and select the drive you want to use with Time Machine.
- 1). Click the "Finder" icon on the dock.
- 2). Locate the file or folder you want to restore or revert to a previous version, then click the Time Machine icon in the dock.
- 3). Click the arrows to browse through the available backups. An item can be previewed by double-clicking it. Individual files and folders can be selected or even the entire OS X drive to restore the whole system. Once you've found the item being restored, click it to select it.
- 4). Click the "Restore" button on the bottom-right side of the screen to restore the selected item.
- 1). Insert the OS X Install DVD and restart or power on the system.
- 2). Press the "C" key on the keyboard while the system is starting to boot from the DVD.
- 3). Select your language and continue on the installation screen.
- 4). Click the "Restore System from Backup" option in the "Utilities" menu at the top of the screen.
- 5). Click "Continue" and select your Time Machine backup volume. Select the backup you want to restore. The process will take some time to complete and the system will then restart.
