Every time you are home, do not leave them in the open.
Keep them in your garage or carports.
If you have gates, keep them lock all the time.

Make sure you have good lightings all over the place.
Burglars and other perpetrators love to prowl in the dark, where they cannot be seen.
So make sure you brighten up places such as your back doors, near basements and backyard.

Keep a pet dog at home.
Dogs are good alarms when prowlers are on the loose.
Just make sure you train them and feed them well.

Double-check the locks when you are leaving your home.
Sometimes you may have locked the front door but left the back door unlocked.
You may even think everything is secured but you forgot to lock the windows.
Remember, a burglar would always find an easy way in and if they cannot go in through the door, they will come through the window.
So do not make it easy for them.

Build good relationships with your neighbor.
The people living next door can be your own personal security.
They can watch out for your place while you are away.
If you are good to your neighbors, they will be happy to check on your place from time to time, even without you asking.

If you will be away for quite some time, you might want to put a hold on all deliveries.
Better yet, you can ask your next-door neighbor to pick the mail on your box.

Avoid keeping spare keys in your secret hiding places.
People love to do this for convenience.
Unfortunately, burglars and other criminals know this and they way stop and search for it before deciding to break in the windows and other entrances.

If someone has successfully broken inside your homes, then change your locks.
Do not leave the house until you have done this successfully.
Make sure you use a high quality lock and control the spare keys.
If possible, you give access to immediate family members.
