How to Troubleshoot a Central Air Unit Freezing Up in a Condo
- 1). Check for water below your air conditioner. Inspect the surface of the indoor coil encloser. If it is cold, turn off your unit for at least one to three hours to see if it will unfreeze.
- 2). Turn on your air conditioner. Inspect the return-air registers and make sure they are not blocked. Remove objects such as furniture and toys that are near the air registers to allow sufficient air circulation.
- 3). Remove the filter from your outdoor unit's filter compartment. Removing the filter varies with different units, so refer to your manual. Brush off dirt and debris to clean your filter if it is clogged. Purchase a new filter if the old one is damaged. Some unit manufacturers recommend changing the filter every month, so refer to your manual for the proper maintenance steps.
