The Etiquette of Christmas Business Gifts
- That is the question on many people's lips. It is not necessary to purchase gifts for co-workers, employees or even your boss. This is strictly personal preference. Whatever you decide, keep it professional and, of course, check your office policies, which may prohibit gift-giving.
- Giving gifts to clients and co-workers shows your appreciation. When everyone else is swamped with year-end projects, holiday shopping and incoming guests, you took the time to present them with a gift. If you're presenting gifts to clients, the gesture may bring you repeat customers.
- Equality is the name of the game. Make sure all gifts to your employees are similar and have no significant differences---that way, it doesn't appear one employee is favored over the others. Some office-appropriate presents are gift baskets, gift cards, calendars, and office supplies or decorations.
- Sometimes a card will suffice for clients. If you'd like to send a gift, consider gift baskets, which are available at online flower and gift basket shops. Another option is an item related to your company, such as a coffee mug with your company's logo.
- Sending gifts to clients and co-workers can be tricky. You don't want to get too personal. Sending gag gifts to a client probably isn't a good idea. When giving gifts to your boss, don't go over the top---gift giving isn't a competition. You also wouldn't want your boss to think you are trying to bribe her into liking you more. Be sensitive to what is appropriate in your workplace---nothing sexual or offensive. Cash or personal gifts---such as makeup, clothing, bath products and jewelry---are not appropriate.
