Breast Augmentation Horrors

Breast augmentation, enhancement or implantation is a surgical method for enlarging, or expanding, breast size area.
This procedure is used to give a fuller breast look, give better contour and more cleavage.
The implants utilized are breast-shaped pouches that have a saccular shape, are composed of a silicone outer shell, and filled with either silicone gel or saline (salt water) solution In breast augmentation procedures, when silicone gel-filled implants burst, some women may notice a decrease in breast size, formation of hard knots, uneven appearance of the breasts, pain or tenderness, tingling, swelling, numbness, burning, or changes in sensation.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some women may unknowingly encounter a rupture without any symptoms, and this is called a silent rupture.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment specially designed for imaging the breast may be used for assessing patients with suspected ruptures or leakage of their silicone gel implants.
Leaking, Ruptured Implants Once a leak or rupture occurs in silicone implants, the gel may escape from the capsule around the implant, migrate away from the breast, and could cause lumps called granulomas to form on the breast, armpit, arm, chest wall or abdomen.
When this happens, plastic surgeons usually suggest removal of the implant if it has ruptured even if the silicone is still enclosed within the scar tissue capsule, because the silicone gel may ultimately leak into the adjacent tissues.
Whenever saline-filled breast implants deflate, the saline solution seeps out either through an unsealed or broken valve, or through an opening in the implant shell.
Implant deflation can happen instantly or progressively over a period of days, months, or even years and could be noticed by the loss of size or shape of the implant.
Additional surgery is required to remove the deflated implants.
Thick Scar Formation Another possible risk when undergoing breast augmentation would be the development of a thick scar that generally forms around the implant, called a capsule, and this could become very hard.
This deformity is called a capsular contracture, and could result in pain and/or a distorted appearance of the breast.
Once the implants get older, the greater would be the chances that these problems will occur.
Other Breast Augmentation Risks Other risks associated with breast enhancement procedures would include infection, excessive bleeding and anesthesia-related problems.
At present, there have been around 120,000 reports of silicone implant ruptures and leakages, as well as 50,000 cases ofsaline-filled implant ruptures in the United States and Europe.
Furthermore, the FDA and the US Health and Human Services department has given credence to several recent studies that have indicated a slight increase in suicides among women who have cosmetic breast implants.
The underlying motive for this increase is indefinite, although research suggests that this may be due to fundamental psychological problems in women who acquire implants for cosmetic purposes.
Others have suggested that women may be distressed because of the burden of breast implant complications.
There have been a lot of reports made about the possible health risks associated with breast implants.
Majority of the concerns have centered on silicone gel-filled implants that have leaked or ruptured.
As early as 1992, the Food and Drug Administration had already restricted the use of this type of implant and ordered further research done.
At present, only saline-filled implants are used for cosmetic breast surgery.
Current research however, has shown no evidence of long-term health hazards from intact silicone-filled implants.
