How to Catch Walleye Fish in Ohio
- 1). Obtain an Ohio state fishing license at a license dealer or online at the Ohio DNR website. You must have a fishing license on your person at all times while fishing in Ohio.
- 2). Fish with a medium category spinning tackle that utilizes a 6 to 10-pound test for jigs and bait-casters. If using crank-bait, obtain a 10 to 12-pound test line.
- 3). Attach night-crawlers, worms or minnows onto jigs or "mayfly" rigs if you're fishing for walleye in late March to mid-May. This practice, a favorite among walleye anglers, should increase the amount of bites you get on your jig.
- 4). Fish low bottom areas prior to the gizzard shad hatch. Drag your line slowly near coves and deeper bottom features to bring the walleye out of the depths.
- 5). Troll shorter crank-baits near the surface after the gizzard shad hatch in May. Use baits that imitate gizzard shad such as "Wee Warts" or "Shad Raps."
