How to Sculpt Babies Out of a Cake
- 1). Bake one sheet cake, to have enough cake to sculpt your baby. While the cake cools, cover a 9-inch-by-13-inch sheet of cardboard with aluminum foil, to serve as your cake base.
- 2). Cut your sheet cake in thirds vertically. Then cut one third in half horizontally to make two rectangles.
- 3). Place one rectangle on your cake base. Using your pastry bag, pipe a thin layer of icing on the cake, then place the other rectangle on top. This becomes the pillow for your baby.
- 4). Trim the edges of the cake pillow, tapering them down at a 45-degree angle.
- 5). Cut out the baby's torso, tracing around a 6-inch cake pan. Then cut the baby's head. Freehand the head, making it about the same size as the torso -- babies are out of proportion -- and give it the contours of a face in silhouette. Repeat this until you have four torsos and four heads.
- 6). Pipe icing on one of the torsos, then add the next torso. Again, ice, then stack. Repeat this for both the baby torsos and the baby heads, to create the elements for your baby cake.
- 7). Ice the sides and exterior of the pillow with your frosting, then set it in the refrigerator to firm up. Use an offset spatula to spread the frosting around the sides of the cake. While it's hardening, ice the exterior of the head and torso in the same way.
- 8). Pull the cake out of the refrigerator after 15 minutes, then stack the iced head on the pillow and place the torso below the head. Use your spatula to touch up the icing, then refrigerate the cake for 15 more minutes.
- 9). Cut legs out of the rest of the cake, making curved arches like the baby legs are tucked up. The legs will be covered by a fondant blanket, so don't need to be precise. Cut four layers of legs.
- 10
Ice and stack the legs, as you did the other cake elements. Place the legs in front of the torso. Refrigerate the entire cake for several hours. - 11
Roll out flesh-colored fondant to 1/8-inch thickness, using your rolling pin. Drape the fondant over the baby head and torso, pressing it into the cake. Use a small knife to cut the fondant at the bottom. - 12
Roll out colored or white fondant to make a rectangle baby blanket. Cover most of the torso and legs with the blanket, pressing the fondant onto the frosting to make a smooth layer. - 13
Use the end of a paintbrush to push fondant into the baby face to create indentations for eyes, or a mouth. To build up features like a nose, roll out more fondant, then apply a patch over the initial layer. - 14
Paint the eyes, hair and lips of the baby, using edible paint.
