How to Make Mitten Covers
- 1). Tie a slip knot around one of your needles and hold two needles together. With the working yarn over your thumb and the yarn tail over your index finger, wrap the yarn tail over and around the needle that does not have a slip knot, then wrap the working yarn over and around the first needle with the slip knot. Repeat until you have 12 stitches on each needle.
- 2). Knit each stitch on the first needle, then knit each stitch on the second needle in the back of the loop. This will untwist the stitches and create a row of stitches in the middle.
- 3). Knit the first stitch of the second round, then make a stitch between the first and second stitches by knitting into the connecting yarn. Knit each stitch until one stitch is left on the first needle, make another stitch, then knit the last stitch on the first needle. Repeat this process on the second needle, increasing the round four stitches. Knit each stitch around for the next round.
- 4). Repeat Step 3 until there are 48 total stitches, 24 stitches on each needle. If you are using double point needles, you can divide your stitches evenly on four needles at this point. If you are using circular needles for working in the round with two circulars or using the Magic Loop method, keep the stitches divided on two needles and move stitches to the cables of the circulars as needed.
- 5). Knit each stitch around, working in stockinette, until the mitten cover measures 5 inches long. Bind off your work knitwise and weave in the loose ends. Repeat the entire process for the second mitten cover.
- 6). Attach the optional button to your fingerless gloves in the place that covers the very center of the top of your hand with a yarn needle and matching yarn. If you do not want to attach your mitten covers to your fingerless gloves, skip this step.
- 7). Thread a spare piece of yarn onto your yarn needle and create a loop at the bottom of the mitten cover where it would line up with the button. Knot it securely and slip the loop over the button to attach the mitten cover to your fingerless gloves. If you chose not to use the button, skip this step.
