How to Deter Burglars
- 1). Install a home security system, and clearly display the company's notification on or near all the doors leading into your home.
- 2). Replace your doors with ones that have a solid core or are made of metal. If this is too expensive an option for you, install high-quality Grade-1 or Grade-2 dead-bolt locks with one-inch throw bolts.
- 3). Install security lights near all the entry points of your home including the garage. Security lights automatically turn on when they detect movement nearby. To prevent burglars from disarming your lights during the day, place them just inside your doors and have them pointing outside.
- 4). Ask a neighbor or a friend to pick up your mail every day if you aren't going to be home for an extended period of time. Accumulated mail or newspapers is a sign to burglars that no one is home.
- 5). Park your car in your garage at all times. If your car is out in the open, a burglar can break into it and steal your belongings. What's more, if you consistently leave your car outside, an observant burglar may notice when it is not in the driveway and try to break into your home while you're gone.
- 6). Shred all important documents that display how much money you have or the items that could be inside the home. Burglars will go through your garbage to find this information, so make it difficult for them by shredding your documents.
- 7). Insert wooden dowels in the tracks of your sliding doors and windows, to block any attempted openings from outside.
