Soft Shade Window Treatments
- Roman shades are a flowing type of window treatment that folds together in evenly-sized panels then it is raised. And when a roman shade is lowered, the panels are almost completely unnoticeable creating an obvious and beautiful focal point in the room they are utilized in. Many different fabrics can be used to create a roman shade. From silk to cotton, woven fabrics to knitted fabrics, if your creative taste and decorative style demands it, you will likely find what you are looking for in a roman shade. Some roman shades also reveal pictures, photos, or designs that were worked into the fabric when they are closed over the window. Roman shades are a versatile and attractive window treatment option for any home.
- A balloon shade is a variation of a roman shade. The basic opening and closing operation is the same; and the folding panel design is the same. But the effect produced by the balloon shade is quite different. Balloon shades are made out of fabrics that are less rigid than roman shades, so when they are opened, the fabric positioned in between the strings of each panel will bunch and gather together creating a "ballooning" effect. Also, because the fabrics used to make balloon shades are lighter, they are also sheerer than a roman shade, though it is possible to customize a balloon shade with light-blocking capabilities on the side of the shade that faces the road. Balloon shades are typically used to create a formal atmosphere is the rooms they are designed for.
- An Austrian shade is the most similar to a balloon shade than to a roman shade, but the three styles are similar in overall design. The Austrian shade looks like the main curtain one would find in a theatre. When the curtain is raised the fabric forms deep scallops between the draw strings, and these scallops create a highly defined bottom edge. These shades are made out of many types and weights of fabrics, but the fabric types that work the best are light and typically sheer. If you like the idea of having an Austrian shade in your home but desire light blocking capabilities, install a light blocking drape or shade behind the Austrian shade for privacy.
