How to Create Goat Soap
- 1). Choose the oils, fragrances and butters you would like to use in your soap.
- 2). Use the lye calculator to calculate what quantities of oils and liquids you should use in your soap recipe. Quantities will vary greatly depending on the oils and the fat content of your soap. You will be given percentages of your ingredients. Coconut oil, olive oil and lard can be part of your oils used. For example, 30 percent to 40 percent of your oil quantity can be coconut or olive oil. There are several lye calculators online. Go with the one you are the most comfortable using.
- 3). Figure out how much goat's milk you will need using the lye calculator. (All of your liquid is goat's milk.) Put the goat's milk in a zippered plastic bag and place it flat in the freezer overnight.
- 4). Clear out any messes in the kitchen, including sinks. Cover the countertops you will be using with wax paper. Tape it down. Make sure all of your utensils, objects, and ingredients are clean and sitting next to you on the countertops.
- 5). Measure our solid oils and put them in the large pot (12-quart). Melt them using medium heat.
- 6). Measure your liquid oils and add them to the pot. After all the oils are heated sufficiently, but not boiling, take the pot off of the stove and place it on the other side of the sink.
- 7). Measure the smaller (10-quart) stainless steel pot on the scale.
- 8). Take the milk out of the freezer. Slam it on the countertop a few times to break it up. Carefully remove all of the pieces and place them into the smaller pot. Put on your safety gear.
- 9). Place the pot with the milk on the scale. Write down the weight. Add the amount of lye you need. Pour the lye into the pot until the required weight is reached.
- 10
Place the pot on one side of the sink and stir the lye with the stick blender until the milk begins to break up. Stir slowly for 12 to 15 minutes, or until all of the milk chunks are broken up. - 11
Pour the lye mixture slowly on top of the heated oils. - 12
Pour vinegar into the pot that contained the lye, continue filling the pot up with cold water. - 13
Use the stick blender and immediately begin stirring slowly the pot with the lye and oil mixture. Alternate blending and resting in one-minute increments. Once the mixture begins thickening like gravy, add any fragrances or oatmeal that you want in the soap and mix well. - 14
Line soap molds with wax paper. - 15
Pour the mixture into soap molds. Cover with a sheet of cellophane wrap. Let sit for 30 minutes. - 16
Move the soap to a place where it will not be disturbed. Leave it there for 24 hours to 48 hours. - 17
Cut the soap into bars using a designated knife. Set back into soap mold on the small end so that there is room for air flow between the bars. Set in an area where the bars are out of the way and will not be disturbed. Leave for about four weeks for the soap to cure. - 18
Wrap the bars after they are cured to give to family or to sell.
