How to Paint Lines on a Carpet

    • 1). Measure the length and width of your carpet. Draw a representation of the carpet, scaling it down by replacing feet with inches. For example, if your carpet is 8 by 5 feet, draw an 8-by-5-foot rectangle.

    • 2). Use a ruler to design a pattern on the drawing. Include vertical and horizontal lines or diagonal lines in any pattern. Use other furniture or decorations in the room to get an idea for complementary patterning.

    • 3). Convert the measurements -- feet to inches, for example -- so you know the length that each line will be on the carpet. Write down these measurements on the drawing for easy access.

    • 4). Transfer the pattern from the paper to the carpet, using a tape measure and masking tape to mark off the lines. For each line, put a piece of tape on either side, leaving the space for the line in the center. This will help you determine both the placement of the line and keep the paint from spreading.

    • 5). Paint between the pieces of tape using a high-gloss latex paint and a brush or roller. Allow a few hours for the paint to dry, then peel away the tape. Touch up any spots that need it.
