    • 1). Lower your bed by removing the bed frame and box spring from under your mattress. Place your mattress directly on the floor. Additionally, remove a footboard or headboard if you previously had one attached to your bed.

    • 2). Push the head of the mattress up against a wall. Be sure there is no space between the mattress and wall where you child could get stuck.

    • 3). Place your child on his back, between you and your partner, to sleep. In the first months of your baby's life, keep all pillows and blankets away from your child to prevent overheating.

    • 4). Teach your child to get down from the bed by sliding off on his or her stomach, feet first. Your child should only attempt this move when he or she is old enough to do so on his or her own.
