DIY Ground Rod Connection
- 1). Scrape paint, dust, and debris off the grounding rod with the wire brush. Brush clean the first three inches of the grounding rod.
- 2). Clean the existing ground wire with the wire brush. If the ground wire has not been installed and the end still has an insulation jacket then you must strip it. Use the wire stripper to remove an inch off the insulation jacket.
- 3). Slip the ground-rod clamp onto the grounding bar. Place the ground wire between the clamp and the ground bar. Make sure all the screws on the grounding clamp make contact with the stripped ground wire.
- 4). Secure the clamp and wire in place with the wrench.
- 5). Test the amount of resistance with the ground tester. Follow the directions included with the ground tester to test for the amount of resistance of the ground rod. Connect the tip of the ground tester to the grounding wire on the wire clamp. Any reading below 25 ohms is perfect, if you have a higher reading you will need to contact an electrician to have another grounding rod installed.
