Goal Setting After 50 - Three Myths That Will Keep You Stuck

Beliefs are powerful in keeping us from going after what we may want for ourselves.
Our inner language is what moves us forward or keeps us in the familiar comfort zone.
After years of thinking a certain way the ideas seem like they are truths.
To move out of this comfort zone takes a change in attitude and a willingness to try something different.
When working with people in their second half of life there are three myths I hear most often that come up as reasons why they can'tmove forward.
It is as if these three myths are part of the blueprint for life.
Myth #1: It is too late to make changes Where did that idea come from?I think it may go back to a time when life spans were shorter and it seems to be a remnant of old thinking.
It has amazed me how often I have heard people, who yearn to develop in new directions, find this belief holding them back.
Myth #2: By now one is set in ones ways The fact that people tend to have established habitual ways of doing things is certainly true as they get older.
That comes about by doing things over and over in the same way.
With that belief system the desire for any change can be easily discounted.
Myth #3: It's genetics How often have you heard someone say: that's just how he/she is.
This belief system makes it a certainty that there will be no expectation of the person to make changes.
What you can do: 1.
Open yourself up to the full dimension of who you are.
Believing these three myths can become a self fulfilling prophecy.
If you believe that it is too late to make any changes you will keep staying in a familiar comfort one.
It may not be good for you but it is familiar.
Instead open yourself to the full dimension of who you are instead of limiting yourself.
People are constantly redefining aging and making it a vibrant time of their life.
2.
Change begins on the inside By recognizing that the myths are myths and not reality you can redefine for yourself as to what is right for you.
By doing that you begin to evolve and grow according to your own drummer.
3.
Take action.
Changing ones belief system and taking action go hand in hand.
If you feel that you are bored by the repetitiveness of your life start making little changes.
For instance, if there are unfinished tasks that bother you pick one and finish it.
Completing something that has been nagging at you is a good feeling.
You will find that as you start accomplishing thingsyou will start thinking bigger.
Emotional satisfaction and fitness grows by takingresponsibilityto be the kind of person one is capable of being .
What is important may change as one gets older but desire for inner contentment is ever present.
