    • 1). Clamp a hook between the jaws of the vise. Begin wrapping the thread at the hook and cover the entire shank until you reach the hook bend.

    • 2). Cut a 1-foot section of 5x monofilament line and hold it on the hook shank. Adjust the position with one end beginning at the hook eye and the remainder extending past the hook bend. Wrap the thread from the hook bend to the hook eye, covering the monofilament with each wrap.

    • 3). Cut a 1-foot long section of clear scud back with a 1/4-inch width. Scud back is simple piece of plastic, so a folded section of a clear plastic bag could be substituted for commercial versions of the material.

    • 4). Apply a thin streak of dubbing wax to the thread . Twist the dubbing between your fingers to spin it on the thread. Wrap the dubbed thread from the hook bend to the hook eye. This builds the body of the fly.

    • 5). Pull the clear scud back over the top of the dubbed body. Apply slight tension to stretch the back and make five thread wraps to secure it at the hook eye. Cut away the excess scud back.

    • 6). Wrap the 5x monofilament from the hook bend to the hook eye. Make the wraps in a diagonal pattern with even spacing to create segmentation on the body. Make five thread wraps to secure the monofilament and cut away the excess with scissors.

    • 7). Hook a whip finish tool on the thread and rotate the handle to tie 10 half-hitch knots at the eye of the hook. Cut the thread away from the hook to complete the fly.
