Progesterone is an important female hormone.
It is produced by the ovaries and it is responsible for many changes that take place in the body.
It causes changes in the uterus during the fag end of the menstrual cycle by ensuring that the uterus is prepared to receive the fertilized egg.
It also helps to maintain the uterus when pregnancy occurs.
If a woman suffers from low progesterone, she will have a number of complications.
Usually progesterone deficiency is present in women who are nearing menopause.
However, it can also be present in younger women.
This deficiency manifests itself as premenstrual syndrome, commonly referred to as PMS.
Some of the most common symptoms of low progesterone are as follows: oIt can cause depression and suicidal tendencies.
oInsomnia is often seen in women suffering from progesterone deficiency.
oMood swings and anxiety present just before the menstrual period could be taken as a sign of low progesterone levels.

Usually menstrual flow varies from one month to the next and the cycle changes from 28 days to 20 days.
oWomen with low progesterone are prone to heavy menstrual flow where the sanitary napkin has to be changed frequently during the course of the day.
oUsual weight gain around the abdominal region could be another sign.
oVaginal dryness during peri-menopause or menopause is caused due to low levels of progesterone.
oJoint pains, reduced libido, urinary tract infection and/or intestinal cyst are other symptoms associated with this condition.
According to health experts, low levels of progesterone can be brought on by stress, consuming a lot of meats, using birth control pills with progestin, undergoing hormone replacement therapy or suffering thyroid-related problems.
