How to Write an Opinion Letter to Obtain the Reinstatement of a Job Position

    • 1). Get clear on your position. Realize that simply wanting your job back will not be enough to persuade your former employer. Admit to yourself why you were fired. Determine whether or not the termination was justified. If the termination was unjustified, gather your proof. If the termination was justified, prepare a defense that explains why your employer can be assured you will never repeat the offense.

    • 2). Address the letter. Greet your former employer formally, even if you were on a first name basis. For example, if your boss's name was William Grimley, address the letter "Dear Mr. Grimley." If you don't feel comfortable using your boss's last name, you can also address the letter "Dear Sir" or "Dear Ma'am."

    • 3). Use the first paragraph to discuss how much you enjoyed working in your former position. Thank your employer for the experience, and indicate that you will be glad for the lessons you've learned whether or not you are reinstated.

    • 4). Explain the circumstances surrounding your termination as you see them. If you and your boss see things differently, do not use the letter to contradict his point of view. Explain it from your side without mentioning your boss's side. Begin your sentences with phrases like "As I saw it..." and "From my perspective..."

    • 5). Admit fault if you were at fault. If you weren't at fault, apologize for any misunderstanding.

    • 6). Prove yourself. If you were fired for being late, include a letter from a former employer complimenting your punctuality. If you were fired for being rude to customers, include a letter from a former customer praising your service. Show your employer that whatever happened (or what your employer thinks happened) was an exception to your normal behavior rather than the rule.

    • 7). Be cool. Even if you are very angry, do not display this in your letter. Show your employer that given the chance to work together again, there would be no hard feelings.

    • 8). Keep a copy of your letter for your records.
