In many modern homes, cramped spaces have been replaced by large, open areas full of light and space. Decorating one of these airy living rooms presents more of a challenge to interior decorators who must work to ensure that the entire space is decorated to match and appears adequately inviting. Turning your expansive living room into a cozy den for socialization and relaxation is simple if you employ some large-space decorating tips.

    Dominant Style Selection

    • Before you begin gathering the supplies necessary to decorate your living space, select a dominant style in which to decorate. If you attempt to fill your space with eclectic pieces that do not match, you will likely create a room that lacks cohesion and does not feel well put together. Instead, select a style that appeals to you and plan your room around this, gathering pieces that all fit within the style you elect to adopt.

    Area Rugs

    • Create a cozy sitting area in your large room by defining your space with a rug. Purchase a rug to place in your space, and place chairs around the perimeter. This floor addition defines the space and makes your sizable room more inviting and less intimidating to guests.

    Accent Wall

    • Covering all of the walls in your large living room with a dominant shade would likely create an oppressive feel. Instead of overwhelming your room with color, select a dominant wall and paint this key wall in a bold hue. Select a color that makes a statement, such as a deep green, dark blue or bright red. Use this accent wall as a creative way to bring out a secondary color in your decor and add excitement to your space.

    Bookshelf Sofa Backing

    • Many decorators elect to use a sofa as a room dividing tool, placing this large furniture piece across the room to separate the space. While doing this is a simple way to break up a large space, it also leaves the unappealing sofa back facing into the room. Instead of allowing this sofa back to remain exposed, place a row of bookshelves that are approximately the same height as the sofa top along its back. Fill these bookshelves with books or attractive accent pieces to add excitement to the space.
