    Parabens

    • Ingredients like methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben or butylparaben are all derivatives of parabens, a low-cost synthetic preservative used to protect against microbial growth and to ensure longer shelf life of products. They are commonly used in makeup, moisturizers, body wash, hair products and shaving products. Although parabens have been linked to breast cancer, further research is needed to confirm that. Parabens may cause allergic reactions and skin rashes.

    Phthalates

    • Phthalates, also called "plasticizers," are a group of industrial chemicals used to make plastic more flexible and resilient. They are also used extensively in nail polish, hair sprays and shampoo. According to the Environmental Working Group, phthalates have been found to disrupt hormonal activity and the proper functioning of the male and female reproductive systems. Some studies have also linked the use of phthalates to liver cancer.

    DEA, MEA and TEA

    • These water-soluble ammonia derivatives are commonly found in beauty products that foam including body washes, shampoos, soaps, facial cleansers and bubble baths. According to a PubMed article from Occidental Chemical Corporation in Niagara Falls, New York, these chemicals are irritating to the skin, eyes and the respiratory tract. MEA (monoethanolamine) is the worst irritant followed by DEA (diethanolamine) and TEA (triethanolamine). Repeated use of beauty products containing these hormone-disrupting chemicals have been linked to increased risks of liver and kidney cancers.

    Fragrances

    • When fragrances are listed in the ingredients, it can include 50 to 100 chemicals, most of which are synthetic. Beauty products using fragrances include deodorants, shampoos, skin care, body care and sunscreen. Fragrances can penetrate the skin or enter the body through inhalation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received reports of various symptoms regarding the use of fragrances such as headaches, dizziness, skin discoloration, allergic skin reactions, coughing and even vomiting. Some clinical studies suggest that fragrances can also affect the central nervous system inducing depression, hyperactivity, irritability and nervousness.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

    • Both SLS and SLES are esters of sulphuric acid and they are used as surfactant, causing the foaming effect. They are commonly found in toothpaste, shampoos, cleansing soaps and detergents. These chemicals are also used in industrial strength detergent and degreaser. Animals involved in testing show various side-effects including depression, eye damage, severe skin irritation and diarrhea. According to Natural Health Information Centre, SLS may interact with other ingredients used in the product to form nitrosamines, nitrates that increase cancer risks.
