Straight From the Headlines - Weird Laundry News
The majority of my day is spent imparting laundry advice and wisdom. However, there are just some laundry stories that I just have it share. When you need a break or a chuckle, take a few minutes and remember...laundry can be interesting and entertaining!
Leave The Detergent, Take The Microwave
The Santa Fe police spent a hot 2013 July day on a high-speed chase after a woman stole a microwave, two bottles of laundry detergent and a bag of dog food from a Kmart.
As store workers chased the woman as she left the store, she grabbed the microwave and jumped into her car, leaving behind the detergent and dog food. A police car began the pursuit which had to be abandoned when the driver reached speeds of 100 m.p.h. on city roads. The State Police finally stopped the vehicle on I-25 North where they found the microwave.
The Las Vegas, New Mexico woman was charged with aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer, receiving stolen property, shoplifting, reckless driving and two red-light violations following her arrest Friday.
Money Laundering?
We've all heard about "money laundering" where shady characters move money though lots of different banks and hands to try to prevent authorities - including the IRS - from learning about illegal activity. But one July 2013 customer of a laundromat in Los Angeles took the idea too literally.
At the Joy Land Coin Laundry in Reseda, employees found $655 in cash in the dryer. The owner of the laundry was fluffing and folding clothes when he found the cash in the pile of laundry.
After checking with his regular drop-off laundry customers, no one has claimed the cash.
Could it be dirty money?
I Thought It Was A Thrill Ride
A Fairfax, New Zealand woman decided to take a late night ride down her home laundry chute in a moment of "spontaneous fun". Firefighters arrived to find the woman stuck between floors. Fortunately, this shoot was designed like an elevator with a mechanism to raise and lower the apparatus that was meant to hold the laundry basket.
After working for more than an hour, the firefighters were able to dismantle the pulley system and lower the woman to the bottom floor laundry room. All described the situation as quite claustrophobic.
Laundromat Bans Dirty Clothes from Laundry
The owner of a Troy, Pennsylvania laundromat has banned dirty clothes from his business. Now, forgive me for being dense, but aren't dirty clothes the bread and butter of a laundromat?
At Troy's Suds Depot, clothes that are too dirty are not welcome. The owner says that he does not want local natural gas workers bringing in overly greasy clothes to his self-service laundry. He says that the clothes leave his washers covered with grease and oil and that the next customers can't use the washer.
But in nearby Canton, Pennsylvania, Landon's Laundry welcomes the natural gas workers. According to the owner, he loves the business and works with them to remove the stains and still keeps his washers clean.
Anyone in Troy need some tips on how to remove stains?
There's Nothing Like The Fresh Scent Of Laundry
In June 2013, a National City, California police dog caught the alluring fresh scent of a popular detergent and found the suspect of a string of burglaries. As the police were responding to a robbery call, they saw a car speed away and pursued. The driver abandoned the car and took off on foot.
After fleeing through a local neighborhood, the robber found an open laundry room door and doused himself with powdered laundry detergent; then hid under a tarp. But that police dog couldn't be fooled by the scent of a spring meadow. The suspect was found with white powder still covering his hands and clothes. He now faces a laundry list of charges.
No Hide and Seek In The Laundry Basket
Kids are so imaginative. They can think of things that adults would never consider. Just like the five-year-old Brighton, England boy who had to be cut out of a laundry basket by firefighters.
The little fellow climbed into a bamboo laundry basket during a game of hide and seek. He became wedged and his mother was unable to free him after spending twenty minutes soaping him up with laundry soap. Firefighters used a hand saw to free him and the child is just fine.
The laundry basket, not so much.
Use Your Best Behavior In The Laundry Room
A Nanticoke, Pennsylvania man spent 15 days in the county jail after assaulting a fellow apartment complex resident over using a washer out of turn.
The dispute began when one couple was using the laundry room and the neighbor put a note on the washer that he was next. The couple continued to use the washer by adding their next load and it got heated from there resulting in a push and shove assault.
Fortunately, there was a surveillance video. It didn't solve the issue of who had dibs on the machine but it did catch the laundry rage.
