The Size of Eeebuntu
- Eeebuntu is smaller than most operating systems, taking up only 863.35 megabytes (MB) of hard drive space. There are many advantages to an operating system that uses less than 1 gigabyte (GB). On netbooks such as the Asus Eee PC, there isn't a lot of hard drive space for your files, so you'll want to use as little space as possible for your operating system. It's also possible to carry Eeebuntu around on a portable flash drive and plug it in to boot up your computer.
- The reason Eeebuntu takes up so little space is that it is meant for netbook computers. Specifically, it is designed to be optimized for the Eee PC line of netbooks from Asus. The first version, released in 2008, was made for the Eee PC 700 and 900 models. Later that same year Eeebuntu 2.0 arrived; Eeebuntu 3.0 was released in 2009, extending support to many other Eee PC models, as well as other netbook lines.
- Different operating systems vary widely in the amount of disk space needed. You can discover the space required for any operating system when you look up its system requirements. Windows 7 recommends that the hard drive on which it is installed have 16 gigabytes or more of free disk space, while Mac OS X requires a more modest 9 gigabytes. Although many variations of Linux exist, Ubuntu makes a good example. The regular desktop version of this OS needs 15 gigabytes. You can also purchase a lightweight version that requires only five, while the netbook edition of Ubuntu uses just four gigabytes. By comparison, the less than 1GB Eeebuntu needs is relatively tiny.
- If you have an Eee PC or another supported netbook model and feel frustrated with the size of the default operating system (usually Windows 7), you can download and install Eeebuntu for free. It works on Asus Eee PC models 700, 701, 900, 900A, 901, 904HD, 1000, 1000H, 1000HA, 1000HD and 1000HE, as well as the Acer Aspire One A110L. Make sure you back up your files before installing a new operating system.
