So you want to become a journalist. You want to either write for newspapers or cover events live and have your report broadcasted all across America. Although these industries are basically in the same realm, they are very different from each other. In fact, people who want to get into the each of the industry will need to develop a different set of skills in order to make it. Here are some of the steps that you need to take in order to get a career in journalism.

1. Get an education

Nothing can train you better than going to a university and getting a degree in journalism and in media. Depending on what kind of media you want to get into, you can take up journalism in the classic sense meaning print journalism or of course broadcast journalism. There are also courses that are solely focused on what is called online journalism which is slowly emerging as a big one in the industry.

While you are in the university, you cannot just rely on what you are being taught inside the classroom. If you really want to have the proper training and know the ins and outs of the field, you also have to try your hand and join organizations in your school that are into writing, speech and of course journalism. You can for instance become a staff member of the school newspaper or maybe sign up for the speech club or the debate club.

2. Develop your skills

If you want to have a career in print, then write your heart out every day. Practice truly makes perfect and the more you try, the more you will be used to doing it. There are a lot of ways right now to publish your writing and have people respond to it. Keep a blog and try to update it everyday even if they contain something as silly as your adventures in school. This way, you will be able to know how people respond to your writing. Also, by writing all the time, you will be able to develop your own style.

3. Update yourself

The world is constantly changing and the field of journalism is not exempted from it. Thus, you need to also constantly update yourself with the new things and new trends in the field. The same also goes with your skill level as well as your education. You can do this by attending seminars and conferences. Besides, you need to make sure that you are aware of the latest. After all, people expect the journalists to first know what is happening.

4. Sign up for internship

The best way to really gain some experience, the real kind of work experience is to get an internship in newspapers and in broadcast companies. Here, you will be exposed to what is really happening behind the scenes. This is where you will really experience the real working environment and hopefully learn a lot from it should you get into the industry in the future. Getting an internship can also give you an opportunity to be hired by that company should you give a stellar performance.

It will also be a welcome addition to your resume when you apply to work. It will set you apart from all the newly grads who don’t have much experience in the real world of a journalism career.
