How to Safely Remove Black Mold

    • 1). Seal off the doorways and windows of the room that you have found to have black mold. This is important so that the mold spores do not disperse to the rest of the building. Use the plastic sheeting and make sure that the sheeting overhangs the door and window frames so no mold spores can escape when you start cleaning.

    • 2). Mix 1/2 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. This mixture should be poured into a spray bottle. Place a mask on you your face before entering the room to start removal of soiled items and cleaning. Put on the gloves to protect the hands. Some people prefer to wear boots if the floor is contaminated.

    • 3). Remove any items that have black mold. This might include carpeting, insulation or any other disposable items. Place these materials or items in a heavy-duty garbage bag and seal it tightly. Place these objects out for the garbage unless your community has rules set forth for disposal.

    • 4). Use the spray bottle to dampen small areas where the black mold is located. As you dampen the areas with the bleach mixture, use a rag to wipe the black mold from the area. After some time, you will want to place the rag in a garbage bag and start with a new one. Continue spraying the areas until you have removed all of the mold.

    • 5). Repeat these steps in any other area where black mold has been found. After you are done in a room or area, remove the plastic sheeting from the doors and windows and discard it in a garbage bag. Open the window, if you have one, and let some fresh air inside. If you discover any black mold after developing again, repeat the process. But try to determine the cause first and correct it.
